We’ve come a LONG way since we started in 2009 (hello men’s shirt swapping company!). Check out all the amazingness that’s happened over the years. We can’t wait to see what the next 10 years brings.
thredUP launches as a men’s shirt swapping company and our Co-Founders pose like a boy band in our first press story.Game changer: thredUP introduces the first Clean Out Bag and the tidying wave begins. Fun fact: We didn’t have any distribution centers at the time, so all the bags went to our HQ in downtown SF.thredUP’s #secondhandfirst becomes a trending hashtag on Instagram and inspires over 140k posts. We interview our first #badassmom Kristin Philiposki, and start to grow a community of women who inspire us with their unique stories. Also, boho dreams. thredUP introduces Donation Clean Out Kits for suppliers who want to turn their clothes into cash for charities (and a tax receipt!). Wanna shop thredUP IRL? We open our first brick and mortar retail stores in Texas and California. It’s so nice to finally meet you. The Shop Her Closet frenzy begins and shoppers get first dibs on items Rachel Lindsey wore on her season of The Bachelorette. Penguin print onesie, anyone?White tees go green when Project re:made invites 12 artists to respond to the statement, “Climate Change is Not Real.”The circular fashion economy gets a major boost when sellers can start turning their old clothes into new shopping credit at their favorite retail stores like Reformation and Cuyana.Our Annual Resale Report makes headline news with stats that wow the retail and resale industries. Turns out 56 million women bought secondhand products in 2018, up from 44 million in 2017. The world goes Wilde for our Choose Used tees when celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Lena Dunham, and Jonathan Van Ness pledge to combat textile waste by choosing secondhand over new. NBD.Elizabeth Banks wears a gorgeous dress from thredUP on the red carpet, effectively changing the conversation from “What are you wearing?” to “Why are you wearing…”?Secondhand lands in mainstream department stores all across the country when thredUP opens up shops inside Macy’s and JCPenny. Game on.We’re moving!! After 9 years in SF (and lots of coffee options later), our HQ is moving into a historic building in Oakland. Built in 1880, it has housed dozens of businesses over the years, including the first major bookstore in NorCal. It’s used, perfectly imperfect, and perfectly us. Yep, we’re on track to process a total of 100M(!!!) items by the end of the year.
