5 Easy Summer Self-Care Tools
The days are longer, warmer, and there’s a free-spirit attitude of school’s not in session! that makes summer a perfect time to implement small changes and enjoy life a little more. Here are 5 simple but powerful self-care tools to boost your wellbeing and to share with loved ones around you.
Ground yourself. There are so many ways to ground in the summer that are easy, fun, and naturally lessen your stress load. If you’ve been thinking about planting something new in your garden, starting a garden, or even repotting some of your existing plants, add it to your calendar and do it this month! Plants are extremely nurturing, soothing, and uplifting—they help us breathe better, boost healing, and improve our ability to focus and concentrate. Make sure to connect with the earth by taking your shoes off and going barefoot next time you’re at the beach or at a park party. And don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the simple beauties around you—the trees, skies, sounds and those lucky beings you get to spend the day with.
Play in the sun and make some vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an important role in our health and there’s no greater source of it than that big ball of energy we call the sun. Summertime sunshine makes it optimal for our amazing bodies to synthesize vitamin D from the sun’s rays that penetrate our skin. Your immune system will thank you! Short (10-15min) daily periods of sun exposure without sunscreen during the summer months are enough for most people to make enough vitamin D. Carry Aloe Vera gel for overexposure and grow an aloe plant in your home to use on any type of burn.
Hydrate and get colorful. Heat and sweat can leave our bodies dehydrated during the warm summer months especially if we’re spending lots of time outdoors. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Water doesn’t sound appealing? Get creative by adding a few pieces of your favorite fruits such as berries, cucumber, lemon or mint to a mason jar of water, or consider a healthy alternative like coconut water. If you’re drinking iced coffee or alcoholic drinks, remember they will dehydrate you even more so be extra cautious and increase your water intake while enjoying them.
Go for a walk. Commit to 20-30 min of walking a day. It’s easier than it sounds. Opt for walking to your next coffee meet-up or local errand. You could even have your next touch base at work while walking around the block. You’ll get some exercise in, get your qi moving, and your mind and body will thank you for it.
Turn up the love by giving out more hugs and smiles. It’s no secret that hugs and smiles are therapeutic powerhouses. Hugs can instantly boost the bliss hormone called oxytocin, which can ease feelings of stress, loneliness, anxiety, and anger. Hugging also increases our levels of serotonin and dopamine, lifting our mood, motivation, and that “feel good” feeling. Smiles can have the same effect; they are like hugs to the heart and what’s even better…they are FREE.
