6 Summer Dresses to Slip into this Season

share this:

It’s finally getting warm outside! We love styling for this season because it’s meant to be easy, and nothing says effortless better than a summer dress. From cute sundresses to breezy cover-ups for the beach, dresses are the all-in-one answer to winter’s tedious layering!

We asked six fashionistas to style six summer dresses that will take you from picnics at the park and bonfires on the beach to outdoor weddings and formal affairs. Got someplace to be? There’s a dress for that. No layering necessary.

As an added bonus, we slipped in a few handy secrets to finding a great deal on dresses. Happy shopping!

1. Sheath Dress

When an elevated night out or a summer date comes calling, a sheath dress will save the day! A form-fitting and all-around flattering silhouette, the sheath dress is an instant upgrade without the fuss. Kristine Thompson of Trendy Curvy serves up a versatile event look in a Rachel Roy sheath dress from thredUP.

— Sheaths are just one of those styles that demand attention all on their own! Accessorize minimally with a plain clutch and a little bling on the wrist.

— Don’t be afraid to rock a print! Horizontal stripes are ultra flattering and are a simple way to round out the look.

— Sheaths typically run from mid-thigh to knee length. If it hits the knee (or above), wear a pair of pumps for an elongating effect. Bonus points if you match the color of your pumps with an element of your dress!

— More on the voluptuous side? Bank on this body-hugging style and take a size up your usual to accommodate those curves!

2. Maxi Dress

We’re following just ONE golden rule for ourselves this season: Summer outfits are going to be EASY. Like out-the-door-in-5-minutes easy. That’s why we LOVE maxi dresses. Take notes from blogger Tabitha Shakespeare on how to own her quintessential summer dress from Cloth & Stone.

wp-cta_maxisOUTFIT TIPS:

—  For a cool, easy boho chic look. Reach for a flat brim hat, sunglasses, and a leather shoulder bag (we just love the caramel tones Tabitha is rocking).

— Don’t avoid maximizing on the maxi’s longer silhouette, rock it. Accentuate the length with an equally flowing cardigan or duster coat. Look taller and glide in to every room like the elegant superstar you are!

— Got a cute pair of slides or wedges? Give them proper attention by knotting up the hem of your maxi. Not only does it change up the silhouette and fit of this versatile summer dress, it also adds a little fun, polished texture to your outfit.

—  Maximize your shopping spree! Sort prices by low to high, you can nab several maxis for less than $12!

3. Shift Dress

Perfect for everyday errands AND a date to follow. With the right accessories, a shift dress is ready for anything! Mom of four, Janssen Bradshaw of Everyday Reading pulls an outfit together with enough time to spare for a busy day ahead!

wp-cta_shiftsOUTFIT TIPS:

— Easy outfits don’t automatically mean plain outfits. Reach for light colors and airy fabrics like Janssen’s plissé pleated shift. The tiniest details make all the difference and things like fabric texture can really make an outfit pop! Consider chiffon, crepe, and our favorite summer go-to, linen!

— Shifts can tend to come off dressier than the average dress, so style it down for casual days out with a denim jacket or (if you’re in a streetsmart mood) a bomber jacket. It’s also a great way to upgrade the shifts’ normally streamlined silhouette by tying a layer around the waist.

— Off-set the shift’s shorter length with a pair of strappy wedges or gladiator sandals! The latter being perfect for more casual days out and about.

— Brands like Lularoe, Gap, and Old Navy offer the perfect pieces for casual, off-duty outfits. If you’re stepping it up for a night out, reach out for something sleek and minimal like Theory!

4. A-Line Dress

A super flattering summer style, an A-Line dress is perfect for the office, an elevated lunch, or a formal event.

— Dress an A-line style down by going for a pair of cute wedges or booties and a flat brim hat. Instant boho boost.

— Our favorite thing about A-Line dresses is that it’s nipped at the waist to show off a flattering figure. Maximize that look with a statement belt.

— Because of the silhouette’s shape, a cropped jacket is the best pairing for those cooler nights! Opt for a biker layer for a night out with the girls, or a cardigan for the office and day at the park.

—  Save your size, so it’ll be super easy to spot a great A-Line deal that will be the perfect deal for you!

5. Midi Dress

Flowy and fun, a midi dress is the perfect choice for a breezy summer day. Kristen Ortez from Curated by Kirsten takes a wrap style out for a spin with all she needs for a summer adventure.

wp-cta_midis.jpgOUTFIT TIPS:

— Switch from flat sandals during the day to heeled styles at night to boost your look and lengthen your legs (especially with a spit leg dress)!

— We love allover printed looks! Summer is the perfect time to show off fresh colors and fun patterns. Achieve a balance with patterned dresses like Kirsten’s by grabbing a solid-colored shoulder bag or even a belt.

— A midi is the perfect dress to flow into summer in, maximize that flow and play with texture a bit by throwing on

— Opt in to get email updates about the latest arrivals from your favorite brand so you’ll know right away when a something perfect for you drops. We LOVE maxi dresses from BCBGMAXAZRIA, Old Navy, and Forever 21, perfect for everything from elevated to super casual.

6. Jumpsuits

Okay, so jumpsuits AREN’T technically dresses but we can’t leave them out! If we’re going to talk about all-in-one outfits for summer, then jumpsuits/rompers HAVE to have an honorable mention. Nabila from Dose of Travel slips into a jumpsuit with her favorite accessories.

— Nothing announces “I’ve arrived!” more boldly (and enthusiastically) than a jumpsuit. For days where you want to keep it low-key (but still fierce), reach for a classic black style. It’s the LBD, but updated for the modern woman. Add oversized sunglasses to complete a chill daytime look.

— A jumpsuit doesn’t have to be THE statement that makes an outfit. Make it the foundation for more subtle details like dangling earrings, bangles, and boxy handbag with matching gold detail.

— Take a chance to play with proportions. Wear a wide-leg silhouette and match it with some caged sandals, it’s a sophisticated look that also feels laid-back and easygoing. Perfect for drinks with the girls but also a day around town.

— Jumpsuits can be pretty bold (who doesn’t love a tropical print?), but a fierce pattern isn’t for everybody. Filter by color or even pattern so you can get to that perfect one-in-all faster.
