When we set out to find the best dresses for different body types, we kept going back to the fruit and veggie analogies. Apples, pears, carrots…we’re sure you’ve heard it all by now. But if you’re like us, we find these labels to be more confusing than helpful. And since we’re not into labels in general, we thought it best to ask real women from around the office to share a favorite dress from their closet and tell us why they love it and how it works for their unique shape. Here’s proof that body confidence never goes out of style.

“I think that women must find their own way to dress and to express in a completely different way. Dreams, culture, fantasy, and of course the image in the mirror must be mixed together to find a personal style.” – Unknown

SHIFT

Shannel Hawkins, Brand Marketing Coordinator

“If I’m looking to be comfortable for the day, shift dresses are my go-to. They give me the space to breathe. I’m petite so I usually add a chunky boot or heel to give me some height. I’m also a huge fan of pockets on dresses like this one from Mossimo, so it’s an automatic purchase when I find them!”

MAXI

Jess Blumensheid, Editorial Manager

“I’m a big fan of low-maintenance outfits, and I love maxis because you can throw them on and be done—especially if they’re a looser fit like this hot red Ali Golden dress. My shoulders are wider than my waist, so sometimes I like to accentuate that by cinching the look with a braided belt. If a dress hits my legs mid-calf, I’ll add a little lift with ankle-high heel boots like these casual black Frye ones.”

A-LINE

Britney Freeman, Community Care Associate

“This A-line Ann Taylor dress is my every occasion dress! I can rock it with casual ballet flats and run after my two-year-old comfortably. I can go directly from work to a girl’s night out by simply swapping a cardigan for a funky jacket and pair of stilettos. The A-line silhouette adds an extra flair and works perfectly with my curvier lower half. I feel confident and stylish in this dress!”

SHEATH

Diana Rothschild, Director, Strategic Partnerships

“I love this LOFT sheath dress because it’s so versatile—it’s super comfy but it looks sophisticated. It’s machine washable, which is amazing, and it’s fully lined so I don’t have to wear any special garments underneath. I can wear it on its own for a casual look, or I can dress it up with pearls and a cute bag if I’m going somewhere fancy. It complements my curvy, hour-glass shape and the ruching on the side brings in my waist and hides any mommy tummy.”

BODYCON

Joanne Yuen, SEO + SEM Specialist

“It’s easy for me to get swallowed by certain dress styles since I am very petite. A perfect length bodycon dress helps elongate my body, like this one from Forever 21. I can wear a pair of heels with this flattering dress for a night out or dress it down during the day by throwing on a denim jacket with a pair of casual shoes, like these fun ASOS block sandals I got from thredUP!”

MATERNITY

Cameran Hetrick, Sr. Director of Management Analytics

“This Ingrid & Isabel maternity dress is easy to throw on and dress up or down. I love the long-sleeves, which is perfect for our chilly San Francisco weather. It’s like a blank canvas—I can completely change the look of the dress by adding my edgy All Saints leather jacket or topping it with a cozy cashmere sweater. I love that the stretchy fabric shows off my bump while not feeling restrictive at all.”
