STAFFER SPOTLIGHT: Alba’s Top Tips For Winning the thredUP Game
Welcome to Staffer Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP employees. This edition features Alba Barragan, thredUP’s Nationwide Operations Training Manager. Alba spends time at all of our Distribution Centers training our merchandising employees. It’s her job to know what’s on trend, how to identify quality pieces, verify designers, and (most importantly) how to turn our new employees into fashion experts!
1. What’s the first item you bought from thredUP?
Wow, I have bought so many things in the three years I’ve been with the company, so it’s hard to remember the very first item! But one of my first favorite finds was a sheer, striped Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater for $35.99 that still had tags on it for $230! Total score. It paired perfectly with other prints.
2. What do you love about receiving a thredUP package?
I probably place an order about every other week, so what’s not to love? I never get tired of our packaging. The boxes are adorable (polka dots make me smile) and the “Enjoy” sticker and the thredUP tags are the perfect touch. This might be a weird observation on my part, but I also love our shade of green. It reminds me of summer. Heck, my roommate even gets excited whenever I get something new so she can take a peek at what I received. Once I grab my package I’m totally guilty of showing off all my new clothes.
3. How do you shop on thredUP?
I added “My Sizes” to my search on the site and almost always look at handbags and shoes before anything else. I also search by brands when I’m looking for something a little more specific. Some of my favorite brands to shop for on the site are Zara, Topshop, Free People, and Madewell. If I feel like splurging I dig into the Designer section where I love finding styles from Joie and Equipment. I recently spotted a cute Helmut Lang utility jacket that is still on my mind.
4. What are your favorite items to shop secondhand?
If I had to pick one thing, I’d probably say shoes. Since I started working at thredUP, I’ve had to buy one of those shoe racks that holds 50 pairs of shoes because I’ve become so addicted! Most were hardly worn, and some even came with a box. I’m a sucker for ankle boots, so I always look for those first. Other styles I love buying secondhand are items that might otherwise cost a lot more brand new, like coats for the winter or a leather tote for work.
5. Why do you think #secondhandfirst?
Ever since I began working in fashion resale, my desire buy to clothing new at full price has diminished. thredUP really does serve all my shopping needs, and we have so many new-with-tags options. I have a few Rebecca Minkoff handbags and Vince tees I bought from thredUP that would have cost me three times as much anywhere else. How can you not get excited about that?
I also found that it has been so much easier letting go of clothes I don’t wear anymore because I know I can sell them if they are still in good condition. My wardrobe has become a revolving closet and I like it that way. I’ve turned almost all my friends into thredUP customers. It’s an awesome feeling.
Leave a comment with your favorite thredUP find, we’d love to hear! Stay tuned for more Staffer Spotlights.
