Dresses! AKA the simple lifesavers of any hectic morning. No matter the season, your busy girl can easily throw on a dress and be ready to go in an instant. Shop for casual sundresses, cozy sweater dresses, and cool denim styles that can be worn now and layered later. And we can all take notes from Jaden Smith‘s ability to rock dresses and skirts—these wardrobe staples aren’t just for the little ladies in your life.
A perfect mix of top styles are the backbone of any back-to-school wardrobe. Think tees, tanks, short-sleeve shirts, and long-sleeves shirts that can be worn alone, or layered under jackets and sweaters when that autumn chill creeps in. If your kiddos have to follow a dress code, keep an eye out for button-down shirts for girls and polos for boys.
These cozy layers are made to pull on and play (or study) in. Stock up on sweaters in all colors of the rainbow that can be worn casually to school or dressed up for a weekend brunch with the grandparents! Striped sweaters are classic, but if your little trendsetters want an updated look, try marled, multicolor knits or pullovers with graphic details.
No matter where you live, fall is bound to bring some chilly days. If you live in a milder climate, light cargo jackets and denim jackets make the perfect pint-sized transitional pieces. If you’re facing a couple of months of bitter cold, shop for puffer coats with hoods to keep those precious ears and cheeks warm. And don’t forget a snag a blazer or two. A good wool blazer puts the finishing touch on a button-down and dress pants for fancier school events.
We could go on 4-ever about all the reasons jeans are our favorite back-to-school item, but we’ll cut to the chase: they need ’em. From the playground to the classroom, jeans are about as versatile as it gets. Snag a few pairs in different washes and silhouettes—light and relaxed for a casual look and dark and skinny for a more grownup-y ensemble.
If your kids live in denim but you want to switch things up, try cords or cargo pants as an easy alternative. Look for adjustable waistbands for inevitable grow spurts, and elastic waistbands for the fastest mornings ever. Also, leggings. Stretchy pants are not only super comfy but they are the easiest way to take summer dresses and skirts into fall. While we have lots of love for leggings, they do tend to to wear out faster than any other items in your kids’ closet. Stock up on a few pairs in basic colors and add a few prints and patterns to the mix.
Twirly, swirly, and oh-so fun, skirts can add a little flair to an everyday outfit. On the hunt for the best twirlers? We love denim ruffle skirts, layered tulle numbers, and flowy maxis. Bonus if little shorts are attached (i.e. skorts). Mom and monkey bars-approved.
A is for Activewear
Game on! Chances are whatever activity your kids participate in after school it likely involves burning off all that restless classroom energy. Whether they’re chasing after soccer balls or just running after each other, active kids need specific styles made to play. Browse track jackets, hoodies, leggings, athletic shorts, quick-dry tops, and track pants to keep your mini athletes on the move.
Winning Shoe Styles
Sandals, boots, sneakers, flats, loafers… the list goes on! First thing to look for is comfort, everything else is secondary. Choose styles that can easily transition from the classroom to the playground. A classic pair of slip-ons, a sturdy but comfortable pair of boots, and closed-toe sandals for those transitional days top the list of our must-haves.
