Happy Birthday thredUP! Here are 8 Fun Facts You’re Dying to Know About Us
Whoot! Today’s the day! Sing with us—happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday thredUP and our awesome community, happy birthday to you. And many more…Thank YOU for eight wonderful years. We’re so grateful that you’re on this journey with us to help inspire a new generation of shoppers to think #secondhandfirst.
As you’ll find out below, thredUP started waaaaay back in 2009 as a men’s shirt swap company. Today, we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate our 8th year with you as the world’s largest online thrift and consignment store for women and kids. As they say in tech-y, start-up land, that’s called a pivot.
So, a little about us. Let’s celebrate with a few things we bet you didn’t know. Starting with the significance of the number 8. In numerology, eight represents karma, justice, and balance. It’s the giving and receiving loop. Change and inspiration. Thank you for being a part of our thrift community! We’re so excited for what’s to come.
2009 Pivot, Pivot, Pivot We started out as a men’s shirt swap company. Then we came to our senses… 😉
2010 Onward and Westward We moved our headquarters from Beantown to The City (SF) with just six employees. Most of our originals are still here.
2011 Bags on Bags We didn’t have any distribution centers when we first started so Clean Out Bags were sent to our main office. It wasn’t a pretty sight…
2012 Sweet Dreams The year we learned that most thrifters shop thredUP for a late happy hour between 9 and 10 pm, which also leads us to wonder: How many shopping dreams have we triggered?
2014 Bag Ladies The year we started accepting women’s handbags. We’ve sold 300,000 since then. You’re all quite the fans… 👜
2015 Out of this World Someone sent us a kid’s spaceship costume in 2015. It now hangs in the customer service breakroom. We salute you, mystery cosmic explorer.
2016: Water Savers By choosing to upcycle clothing rather than buying brand new, we’ve helped save over 10 billion gallons of water. That’s equal to 15,784 Olympic-size swimming pools!
2017: Brick and More-ter We opened our first storefronts in San Marcos, Texas; Austin, Texas; and Walnut Creek, California – with more on the way. It’s been nice to meet you in real life.
2018: The best is yet to come. Did someone say birthday cake?
