Ever wonder what it’s like to work at thredUP? We asked a few amazing employees from our headquarters in SF to share their career journeys with us. Meet Ryan, our Algorithms Team Manager.

What is your current role?

I am the manager of the Algorithms team. I have been on the Operations Engineering team in some capacity for the last five years. One of the first things I did when I first joined thredUP was to develop a QA team and process. There was no QA at all. The level of instruction I was given was “figure out QA” which led to a host of other projects.

What keeps you engaged at thredUP?

The problems the thredUP operations team get to solve are crazy, amazing problems. We work in an environment where we only have one-of-a-kind items and we have to balance out a marketplace. When I was going to school, these problems did not even exist. We are able to solve problems that essentially no other company is faced with. I’ve been at the forefront of these challenge at some level  since the day I joined, and it is amazing.

Getting to work on the photo processing efforts for one of the biggest photography operations in the world is really cool. Having to figure out how to put away items when every single piece of inventory you have is unique, is an incredibly interesting problem to tackle.

If you are the type of person who can step into the unknown and you are not going to stop until the problem is solved, this is the perfect environment for you. There have been so many opportunities to make a huge impact across different parts of the business since the day I joined. That has not changed.

How do you collaborate with teams within thredUP?

There are a couple of ways we collaborate. One of the best things you can do is to talk to someone who approaches problems in a different way than you.  You might get a different perspective that unlocks a better way of looking at the problem. The other thing is in a company scaling like we are, no one can understand every system. A lot of the collaboration is figuring out if we want to get something done that spans the whole company, what does that look like?  Can we muster the resources?  How do we coordinate efforts across many teams? Every team from customer service to Merchandising, Operations, Product, Marketing and Engineering, has expertise specific to their areas and if you want to get something done, you seek out those experts.

Anything new and exciting you are working on now?

I manage people now.. I’ve had to change my perspective from a me focused effort. Where your first priority becomes ‘”What are the people I am managing working on and how can I make sure they have all the tools they need?” and “Are they are happy with what they are working on and are making progress without getting stuck?” It’s become more about a shift in focus to make sure everyone else is taken care of first before taking care of myself.

Do you think there are opportunities for mentorship here?

Absolutely. I have been able to be a mentor to so many people here. If you express interest, you will have the opportunity to learn from others here at thredUP.  It seems those who are the most motivated to get better tend to end up with mentors that help them improve their knowledge of the business.
