Community UPdate: Seller Enhancements and Payout Changes

written by Team thredUP

Beginning July 1, 2018, the Payout Structure has been updated, see here

Did you know? Over the past few years, our operations team has processed over 20 million items?!? 20 million! That’s a lot of folks who are thinking secondhand first and choosing to simplify their lives. We are so proud of our seller and buyer community and continually strive to do everything possible to improve and enhance the entire thredUP experience. This year alone, we’ve removed our Standard Bag fee, added a VIP seller option, launched our LUXE program for designer items, and started accepting jewelry.

We are excited to announce a few improvements taking place in our warehouses that will improve overall efficiency and customer satisfaction. Our new state-of-the-art technology will allow us to put more of your items online than ever before at a speed unprecedented in thredUP’s operating history. We are also increasing the size of our bag processing team (currently at 500!) to significantly speed up how quickly your bag is processed.

We know how much you value the convenience of cleaning out your closet with thredUP, but we also know you care about how many items we accept from your bag and your total payout amount. We are always evaluating our processing and payout system in order to bring you the best possible Clean Out experience, and we wanted to share a few updates with you.

Effective on bags received on and after January 1, 2018, we are making a small change to our payout structure, which is outlined in the table below. We are lowering payouts by 2% on women’s items that are listed between $15.00 and $29.99. At the same time, we are making updates to our brand and category acceptance guidelines that will allow us to accept more items from your Clean Out Bag. This means you likely won’t see much of a total payout difference for each bag you send in.

When determining pricing, we take many factors into consideration: estimated retail price, seasonality, age of the item, quality, style, and the level of inventory we already have in that size, brand or style. thredUP listing prices are based on the average price a customer is willing to pay for a specific item. If we accept your item upfront, you will receive a payout immediately. If your item is being sold on consignment, you will be paid after the item sells. Please check out our consignment and upfront FAQs and our Terms of Use if you have any additional questions.

Our complete payout structure for Clean Out Bags received on or after January 1, 2018 is available below:

Thank you for your passion in pushing the thrifty movement forward, inspiring others to experience all the good that comes from shopping and selling secondhand clothes.
