Ever wonder who shops thredUP’s thousands of items to find the best picks for the special campaigns on our homepage? Look no further than Kristy Atkins-Kirshtner, our Senior Director of Merchandising. She spends her days planning the looks you’ll want at the time you’ll want them (festival style in, winter coats out) and making sure we carry only the most desirable secondhand steals. A former fashion designer whose takes on runway chic are office favorites, Kristy favors edgy and feminine pieces, with lots of leather, lace, and layering. Camo pants and high heels? Maxi dresses with leather jackets? We’ve seen her pull them off with aplomb.
Kristy‘s style is all the more impressive considering the recent changes in her life: she met her husband online just four and a half years ago, and after a “whirlwind romance,” got pregnant on her honeymoon. Two-year-old son Kade “is the light of my life,” she says, “we play with cars and trains, read exciting books, watch the moon, look for airplanes in the sky, practice summersaults, watch the garbage trucks out our front window, and take long walks while singing the whole way.”  Here are a few of Kristy‘s favorite outfits for herself and Kade.
At the office: Kristy is a big Free People aficionado, and this flowy, scalloped lace top is one of her favorite layering pieces. “It has lots of texture, which I love.” She likes to layer it over a pair of jeggings like this one from JamesA black leather wedge bootie from Maison Martin Margiela adds the edge she’s craving, without sacrificing comfort, thanks to its stacked heel.
Date night: A world traveler whose globetrotting design career has taken her to Africa, India, China, South East Asia and Europe, the new mom has stayed grounded in the past couple of years. When she and her husband finally get to take the big trip they’ve been itching for, she already has an outfit planned for a night out. This sparkly patterned Parker tunic can work over tights or the favorite Adriano Goldschmeid jeans she’s packed for daytime, topped off with an equally versatile Catherine Malandrino leather jacket. A Deco-inspired silver Kooba clutch tucks into her suitcase, saving room for a less practical, but undeniably sexy addition: sky-high Pour la Victoire caged booties.
For Kade: Like most two-year-old boys, Kade is super-active, and Kristy aims to dress him so he can play. “I always dress him in knit shirts, no restrictive wovens,” she says, choosing warm but loose tops from the likes of Hanna Andersson and Baby Gap. With jeans for cool weather and fun plaid patterned shorts for warmer climes, the only missing element is a pair of her son’s favorite kicks: Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops, in cheerful red and fun camo.
