Employee Spotlight: Community Manager Brenda Law On Living a Thrifty Life
Welcome to Employee Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP staffers. Community Manager and mama-of-two Brenda Law is a thredUP newbie, having just joined the company a mere four weeks ago. It’s Brenda and her team’s job to respond to all the questions and comments across all our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) as well as our app store and third-party review sites. Here, Brenda shares the best customer comment she’s ever received and why she always thinks secondhand first.

What do you love most about working at thredUP?
It’s kind of funny, but I would have to say the youngness of the company. I think with youth comes a lot of energy and the ability to look at things in a unique, fresh way. As someone who has a bit more work experience, I find this really refreshing.
How would you describe thredUP in 5 words or less:
Thrilling, fun, conscious, happy, and giving.
What’s the best comment you’ve seen from the community on social media?
“I love the hunt. I never know what I’ll find. It makes scoring gems all the more exciting!” – @brittanyr30
It’s also anytime someone says, “I love thredUP.” Or “I’m so happy with my order.” I think there’s nothing better than when someone discovers just how fantastic thredUP is, not just in terms of savings, but the one-of-kind items that we have. It’s the thrill they get when their polka-dot box arrives on their doorstep.
What’s your top secret tip to shopping on thredUP?
I’m a big deliberator. If my cart gets empty, I’ll put the items right back to give me a little more time to decide. I also use Favorites quite often. Favorites is a great tool, especially the feature that shows if an item is in someone else’s cart or not. If something I have my eye on goes from unavailable to available, I snag it right away.
I love the magnifying glass tool! I don’t do returns so I love that I can look carefully at an item before purchasing it. I don’t want to be surprised so I always do my diligence.
What’s your top secret tip to cleaning out your closet?
I always approach cleaning out with the mindset of, “I don’t love this anymore, I want somebody else to love it,” and not from the approach of, “Oh my gosh, how much money am I going to make?”
How would you describe your style?
Clean casual. Not a lot of ornamentations or ruffles. And dark colors, always.
What percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted?
I’m going to say now it’s probably 60%.
Why do you think secondhand first?
For my kids, for the future, and because we have so much waste and so much stuff that we don’t use. It baffles me every time I think about it.
Where do you get your coffee?
At home. I’m a thrifter through and through.
What styles are you looking forward to wearing most for fall?
I seem to be really drawn to fisherman sweaters right now. I found a few good ones on thredUP recently. One from Topshop and one from Vince that I love.
What do you keep buying over and over?
Mother jeans. Period.
Best life hack:
When you’re cleaning up (or just in general), don’t leave a room without something in your hand.
What is the first thing you ever bought from thredUP
First thing I bought at thredUP were these Dansko ankle boots. I loved them so much, when a second pair popped up I bought those too.
