share this:

Welcome to Employee Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP employees. Britney Freeman is the newest member of our Community Team, which is led by Brenda Law (featured last month!). She is the badass mom of a two-year-old girl and is responsible for collecting feedback from our customers and answering any questions they might have about our service. Here, she shares why she loves thredUP’s customers so much and the one comment that touched her the most.

P.S. We’ve hidden a chance to win $100 to shop somewhere in this post! Tag. You’re it!

What do you love most about working at thredUP?
I love the creative energy of the company. I’ve met some amazing creative people here that have given me ideas and have inspired me in so many different ways. I also love the aspect of always learning to improve. There’s always something you can learn to do better, there’s always something you can teach someone else.

Also, I have to say this, I LOVE our customers. We just have the best customers. They’re badass moms. I’ve had the opportunity to chat with many of them and they share their stories, they share their favorite outfits, and they give us feedback on how to improve thredUP. They’re simply the coolest women and they’re also amazing fashionistas. You can’t beat that. Even the naysayers are fun because you get the opportunity to turn them around.

How would you describe thredUP in 5 words or less:
Educational, energetic, and guilt-free shopping.

What’s the best comment you’ve received?
It’s from Vanessa Keller. I have to give her a shout out. Amazing customer. Her comment was, “Thank you thredUP for my lovely blue shirt. This blue is the color for colon cancer. I wore this shirt to celebrate my last day of chemo. Thanks for always having clothes that work for me as a plus size lady.” She’s awesome.

What’s your top secret tip to shopping on thredUP?
I always shop My Favorites first. I’m plus size, so I look for Ashley Stewart, Torrid, H&M Curve, ASOS Curve, and Forever 21 Plus. That always works for me.

One thing I do is I try not to shop while I’m in a rush. Unless it’s an urgent need, I try to plan out my shopping. Then I make it fun. My girlfriends and I get together and we have our cocktails and our phones, and we pull up the app and shop together. I love to go shopping with my girlfriends but might as well do it at home while the kids are asleep.

I love fashion and I have a girlfriend who’s really big on saving money so we work together and use our strengths to help each other out.

What’s your top secret tip to cleaning out your closet?
When in doubt, I always say ask our customer service team. Just to be quite honest, my first bag earnings sucked, it was so low. I did it just because I wanted to get all these items out of my house. I didn’t feel like going to Goodwill. I didn’t really follow the right steps. I didn’t check the items well and I didn’t get a good payout. So I worked with our customer service team to get some great tips and once I started going through the steps, my payouts started getting better.

Here are some of my favorite tips:

-Check your items meticulously. Our merchandiser team is checking clothes every single day. They’re going to catch the tiniest little flaw.

-Make sure every item is extremely clean. I always think, would I give this to my best friend? Would she accept it and love it and wear it?

-Ask yourself: Are the styles in season? Are these brands popular at thredUP?

How would you describe your style?
Glam mom on a budget. I would say that my style definitely complements my curves. It’s colorful. And I love red, that’s my go-to color.

What percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted?
70%. Then the rest is all sales.

Why do you think secondhand first?
I think secondhand first because it saves my family money. It also gives me the opportunity to teach my daughter how to be socially and environmentally responsible. We make it a family affair. Even though my daughter is only two, she helps me sort the recycling and scrape the food into the compost. She goes through all those steps. I want to ingrain that in her.

Where do you get your coffee?
I’m a Folgers girl.

What styles are you looking forward to wearing most for fall?
I love outerwear. Yes. I’m obsessed with jackets and blazers and ponchos and capes. I’m very excited about faux fur coats.

What do you keep buying over and over?
I’m a sucker for Ann Taylor dresses. I feel like they fit my body very well, and they work great with my pear shape. They’re comfy. I feel chic in them and they’re affordable.

Best life hack:
Oh, boy. I have two. First one is more of a style hack. I’m really bad at getting rid of clothes so we use the hanger trick. You start with all your hangers facing the same way and then when you wear an item, you turn the hanger around. At the end of the year, any clothes that I haven’t worn, I get rid of.

Second thing for me is I think it’s really good to practice kindness daily and spread positivity. Something as simple as telling a stranger good morning or giving them a smile. You never know what someone is going through and when you’re kind and polite, that energy passes on and brightens someone’s day. It’s an instant pick-me-up.

What is the best thing you ever bought from thredUP?
It was a Zara bubblegum pink wool cape. I swear it was only $10. I feel like a supermom. I haven’t even worn it yet (until now!) but when I put it on at home I feel fabulous.
