share this:

Welcome to Employee Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP employees. Chia Collins is a merchandising and inventory planning pro at thredUP. She helps us decide which styles would sell best on thredUP. She is also a karaoke superstar, who recently schooled us all in her Lunch ‘n’ Learn on the art of singing Top 40 hits in front of strangers. She’s amazing, and here, she talks about why she thinks secondhand first and gives out some top tips for shopping thredUP like a pro.

P.S. We’ve hidden a chance to win $100 to shop somewhere in this post! Tag. You’re it!

What do you love most about working at thredUP?
Because we are a startup, I get to work on things I wouldn’t have the opportunity to work on at other companies. It really fosters growth and creativity. Also, we have killer coffee, so…

How would you describe thredUP in 5 words or less:
Startup. Tech forward. Non-traditional retail.

What’s your top secret tip to shopping on thredUP?
Favorite everything I put in my cart. That way if I don’t buy an item for some reason, I don’t forget about it or something like it next time I shop.

What’s your top secret tip to cleaning out your closet?
Generally speaking, if I haven’t worn it within the past year then I can put it in a Clean Out Bag. Also, if I’m replacing an item, like a pair of jeans, I make a point to get rid of the old thing.

How would you describe your style?
I think my style is anchored on girly. I like girly sporty; girly urban; girly classic. I love floral prints and pops of color. And I wear what makes me happy, regardless of what is considered acceptable or unacceptable for plus size.

What percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted?
About 20%. I’ve always thrifted, but it has been hard to find items in my size. I’ve always thrifted men’s, shoes, accessories, but now with thredUP, I have an easy avenue where I know I can always find something.

Why do you think secondhand first?
I think I’m supposed to say it’s about saving the planet, but in all honesty, saving money gives me a high! Protecting Earth is an added bonus.

Where do you get your coffee?
I like strong coffee, so I like to make my coffee. If I buy it, I do Blue Bottle or a ridiculous latte at Starbucks. Grande, triple shot, non-fat, upside down Caramel Macchiato.

What was the best deal you scored on thredUP?
The jacket in my pic. Vince Camuto bomber jacket for $20.99. I’ve seen this jacket at other retailers at $179. It is my fave!

What is your favorite thredUP find of all time?
There’s a new plus brand named Universal Standard—great quality, basic colors but on-trend cuts. I’m excited we’re already starting to carry it at 80% off original price.

Tell us what you love about the selling experience/Cleaning Out at thredUP.
I used to do peer to peer selling (ebay, depop) and it was a lot of work on my part and a waiting game. Selling to thredUP is way easy (especially with shoes). I don’t have to think about it. My closet is clean immediately!

What styles are you looking forward to wearing most for spring?
We live in California -what season change? J/K. Maxi dresses. They are so effortless and look very chic.

What do you keep buying over and over?
Dresses and anything black. I wear both all the time. I don’t have to think about things matching when I get dressed in the early hours of the morning.
