Four Ways to Wear It: A Plain White Tee
It’ll never stop looking good with jeans, but a plain white T-shirt has life in your closet beyond Saturday afternoons. Styled correctly, a white tee is capable of making the cut for business casual, brunch with friends, and even date night. Here are four ways to make it your own.
Ladylike look: A pencil skirt is a surprisingly great pairing for a tucked-in white tee. The blousiness of the top accentuates the tiny waist the pencil shape creates, and adds some rough-around-the-edges chic to a dressed-up look. The key is to find a pencil with lots of texture, like embroidery or leather, to counteract the blank slate. Keep accessories upscale: a big statement necklace, a chic clutch, and a great pair of heels.
Blazer brilliance: A well-fitted blazer provides the perfect foil to a white tee, whether it’s in classic black or a more trendy white-on-white. The sleek lines visually draw in the tee’s loose edges and add an air of professionalism that makes even ripped boyfriend jeans look thought-through. The dressier the outfit needs to be, the more amped-up the accessories should be: cute flats and a simple necklace for brunch, bold heels and big earrings for date night.
Rocker chic: Every rock star worth their salt has appeared in a swoon-worthy shot in a plain ol’ white tee, and you, too, can get the just-strolled-off-stage look. The elements: a great leather biker jacket, a slim-cut pair of black pants or jeans, and some cool moto boots. Add in a studded purse or even just a swipe of red lipstick, and keep jewelry minimal. Don’t be surprised if someone asks for your autograph.
Long and loose: A white tee doesn’t seem very boho on the surface, but it can be an asset in a hippie-chic look. Try pairing it with a long, flowy maxi skirt, which contrasts the tee’s boxier shape and gives it a laid-back playfulness. Accent the waist by either tucking in the tee and tying a thin belt at the smallest part of your waist, or knotting the hem of the tee at one side of your waist. Add cool sunglasses, flat sandals, and a crossbody bag for that “just got back from Coachella” vibe.
