Hats Off to You: The Best Summer Toppers For Every Style
Before the dawn of SPF, hats were the first line of defense against punishing summer rays. And while we wouldn’t recommend tossing out your sunscreen, hats are still a chic summer style statement that have the side benefit of protecting your face. Yet many women tend to avoid summer hats, fearing they can’t pull them off. The good news: you absolutely can, and affordably to boot. Here are some of our favorite hats for warmer weather, and suggestions for the best looks to wear them with.
Floppy hats: The workhorses of a summer wardrobe, these will look great with a flowing maxi-dress or a cool bikini and sarong by the pool. By day, you’ll want something made of breathable straw, like this sleek black option from ASOS. As evening sets in and the temperature cools, you can opt for a hat made of fabric or felt, like this classic design from Urban Outfitters.
Panama hats: For daytime exploring while on vacation, this timeless favorite is tough to beat, and it packs nicely in a suitcase, too. Cuyana offers a streamlined version that would look great with a cheerful red dress, a light denim jacket, and simple sandals. Or opt for a funky Eugenia Kim hat with a decorative brim, which would look great with a white shift and wild Elizabeth and James wedges in the evening.
Baseball caps: These are definitely a bit trickier to pull off, but with the resurgence in athletic-inspired fashion like baseball jackets and slip-on shoes, there’s never been a better time to try out a fashionable ball cap off the field. For a preppy, put-together look, this chambray J. Crew cap is perfect with white jeans and a crisp green polo. Or go for a hard-edged rocker style with a leather ball cap, paired with a vibrant floral-print dress and a Current/Elliott biker jacket.
