Holiday behind the scenes: Q&A with Kristy Atkins-Kirshtner
With the holiday season in full swing we wanted to spend a few minutes chatting with Sr. Director of Merchandising, Kristy Atkins-Kirshtner, to learn more about how the thredUP holiday campaign came to life.
Lauren Miller: As you started planning the holiday campaign — your first one at thredUP — what did you have in mind?
Kristy Atkins-Kirshtner: For me this time of year is all about being warm and cozy and I love the lights, energy and sparkle of the holidays. I wanted to incorporate these elements into the holiday merchandising campaigns and inspire people to buy gifts on thredUP. To give the campaign a color twist, I added a pretty peacock blue to the traditional holiday red, and threaded this color story throughout our holiday shop. LM: Are there specific emotions you want people to feel when they visit our holiday shop?
KAK: My hope is that the campaigns remind people of special holiday moments and that we’re conveying the excitement of the season. Some of my favorite holiday moments are watching the tree lighting at Jack London Square in Oakland, layering up and taking my son, Kade, ice skating, and catching up with friends at holiday parties. It’s all about these special moments.
LM: How are you celebrating the holidays this year?
KAK: We’re going to spend the holiday with my parents who live in Mariposa, a small town outside of Yosemite. I’m hoping we can go sledding with Kade and take a couple hikes together. A few years ago we stopped buying gifts for each other and instead sponsor a family in the area. This tradition has become a big highlight for us.
LM: Okay, so Kade is now two and a half… Does he know about Santa Claus?
KAK: Yes! This is the first year we can start talking about Santa Claus and he’s all over the idea. And “Santa” is very excited about what’s going under the tree; a giant tepee that we can set up in his bedroom. We love to be adventurous outdoors and as a family we love camping. This is bringing the camping trip, inside. Adding twinkling star lights to the entrance of the tepee makes it feel like a magical adventure.
LM: I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask: what are you wearing this season?
KAK: I’m all about layering and incorporating texture so winter is one of my favorite seasons. I’ve been wearing a lot of faux fur – it’s on my jacket, scarf, gloves – and I like to pair it with lace. Now is the time to wear sparkles so I work in something shimmery when I can.
LM: Is there a thredUP item you’ve been eyeing?
KAK: I’m on the site constantly and have trouble resisting! I actually didn’t buy secondhand clothes before I started this job, and now I’m completely hooked. This dress is what I’m lusting after right now.
