Holidays 2014: What to Wear, Where
Holiday gathering ensembles are one of the biggest style conundrums going. You want to be stylish enough to look good among friends and family for a special meal, but not so hyper-fashionable that you can’t lounge around afterwards watching holiday movies (or indulge in that second slice of pie). To help, we’ve concocted three ensembles that will look good and feel great at any kind of festive gathering, from a casual get-together with friends to a more formal affair. Happy Holidays!
A casual party with friends: Whether you’re hanging out with a group of pals who don’t want to fly to see out-of-state family, or splitting cooking and eggnog-drinking duties with the neighbors, a relaxed holiday is best enjoyed without too many frills. A high-waisted, plaid wool pant like this Dagmar pair is more dressed-up than jeans, without sacrificing comfort. Pair it with a fitted black cardigan, like this one from J. Crew, and a pair of silver ShoeMint flats that add a little celebratory sparkle. You’ll look classy, but still be relaxed enough to cook and run around all day long.
Intimate family evening: If you’re keeping your party limited to your immediate family this year, it pays to go a little fancier– but not so fancy that you can’t indulge in the delicious meal you’ve all spent the day preparing. Embellished sweaters are very on-trend this year, in styles that are prettier and more subtle than the gaudy holiday cardigan of yore. Consider pairing a girly sweater with a delicate embellished pattern, like this cute cropped Ann Taylor number, with a sleek Wilsons leather pencil skirt to give it a bit of edge. On your feet, Stuart Weitzman ankle boots add a little flair, but are still comfortable.
Dressed-up holiday party: It’s the season to break out the nice wine glasses and heirloom tablecloth. Time to fancy it up. Our favorite dress style for a holiday party is fit-and-flare, which, in addition to looking great on a wide range of body types, conveniently drapes out right at the point where your tummy might show its stuff after a big meal. This silk number from Banana Republic combines elegant black with luxurious fabric, and would make a great backdrop for a big statement necklace. Or, for a burst of holiday color, try this red H&M dress, perfect with a pair of dangly earrings. On your feet, delicate gold J. Crew heels add another touch of cheer.
