Turn the Heat Up: How to Wear the Off-the-Shoulder Trend All Summer Long
Summer’s here which means our favorite warm-weather style is hot, hot, hot! We couldn’t be more excited to shrug off the layers and slip on an off-the-shoulder top. This shoulder-baring trend is heating up at the thredUP office, so the thrEDIT team went hunting for summer-worthy style tips from our trendy staffers.
We’ve enlisted three fashion-obsessed ladies to spill the beans about their most-loved styling hacks, off-shoulder brands, and summer must-haves for work, date night, traveling, and every day. Read on, summer babes!
San Francisco summers aren’t known for being hot (quite the opposite, actually), so when a good day comes along, all my summer clothes come out! If the temperature hits above 70ºF, you can find me in my go-to summer outfit: an off-shoulder top, jeans, and wedges.
Easy and comfortable is all I ask for! The top and wedges are elevated yet totally versatile. I can take this outfit from a BBQ with family to a night out with the girls.
NILDA’S STYLE TIPS:
— Pro Tip: To find the perfect off-the-shoulder top, filter by “Shoulder Cut”!
— I love linen! It’s super breathable and perfect for muggy climates. The light, crinkled texture of this fabric highlights the shirred details around the neckline and sleeves, which adds textural interest to an otherwise simple outfit!
— The relaxed silhouette and bell sleeves are probably my favorite thing about this off-shoulder top. They add a little movement to my every step. Plus, this top looks SO good tucked into my go-to pair of high-rise jeans. All that volume really accentuates my curves.
— Between you and I, these wedges are my go-to airport shoes if I’m going for a no-effort yet put-together look. That’s how comfy they are! But if you’re not a fan of wedges, this outfit can be paired with strappy sandals or pointed flats.
I always take advantage of this season to experiment and have fun with my look. I love injecting summer vibes into all my outfits, including for work!
Stripes are a super fresh pattern for summer and spring, they never go out of style, so I incorporated them into this off-shoulder top and tuxedo stripe pants. The red and white pattern reminds me of classic popcorn packaging, so I call this look my “Corporate Circus” outfit (as a joke, of course, haha).
TRACEY’S STYLE TIPS:
— Some of you might be thinking “umm, an off-shoulder top at work?!”, and yes it can be done! While off-shoulder tops tend to be revealing, they usually come with an elastic trim so you can adjust coverage according to your comfort. I wore this striped top high on the shoulder for a work-friendly peek-a-boo effect.
— The secret to rocking an off-shoulder top (or anything revealing) confidently is to balance coverage. I paired this cute top with long formal slacks in dark navy blue for a tailored twist.
— To finish it off the look, I slipped on a pair of mules. They’re my super quick and easy solution to adding polish to any outfit, plus it doesn’t hurt that they’re ALWAYS trending during summer.
I’ve been obsessed with off-shoulder dresses all winter long so naturally when summer finally arrived I just HAD to get this dress from LPA. I absolutely love the puff sleeves and the tie-front detail, so sexy and perfect for an elevated date at a waterfront bar or a fancy dinner. Honestly, I’d take myself out for drinks just to rock this look!
JENN’S STYLE TIPS:
— There’s a lot going on with this revealing, shoulder-baring style, so I left my look relatively simple. I’d put on a necklace to polish off the entire look.
— As you can tell the sleeves slip quite a bit past my shoulders! I would definitely look for a dress that has a fitted bodice (like this one), so there won’t be any wardrobe malfunctions on your night out.
— I LOVE a coordinated outfit. I paired this dress with neutral brown strappy sandals that show off my red pedicure! Plus, the block heel is sooo comfy, I could strut for days. [TIP: When shopping for heels, filter by “chunky heels” to find the perfect block heel!]
