HOW TO: Transition Your Warmer Weather Faves To Cooler Temps
Capsule wardrobe blogger Harben Porter knows better than (almost) anyone how to flex one piece for different seasons. The combination of living in the Bay Area (where layers are a necessity, and the temperature changes on a dime) and having an über-efficient capsule wardrobe means Harben is a pro at making her pieces work anytime, anywhere.
We realize that most thrEDIT readers live in climates that are transitioning into cooler temps, so we asked Harben for her advice on how to make her favorite warmer weather pieces work in the fall, too. Read on!
1. Think of your dress as a layering piece, rather than the main event.
“The go-to is to wear your warmer-weather dress with a pair of tights, but I challenge you to try a pair of jeans underneath instead. That look is fresh and on trend right now and a great way to play around with proportions.”
2. Your leather (or vegan leather) jacket should be your BFF.
“A leather jacket adds edginess to just about anything that you put on. I love to layer a black leather jacket, which might have a more masculine or androgynous vibe, over something that’s a little bit more feminine. I might also wear a leather jacket over a white shift dress, which is a perfect way to bring that dress into cooler temperatures, and warm it up for fall.”
3. White tennies and ankle boots go with EVERYTHING.
“White sneakers are so on trend and so fun to wear. I feel like they punch up and give a little edge and a little contrast to just about anything. Also, booties or ankle boots are key for transitional weather. I have a pair of black Chelsea boots that I love. I pair them with jeans. I pair them with my mini skirts. I pair them with a dress. For fall, it’s also important for me to have something that’s walkable and will keep my feet warm.”
4. Extend the life of your white jeans.
“I know that you’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day, but forget that rule. I love wearing white denim, and I love mixing it with cream-colored items. I think there’s something really polished about that.”
5. Find your key layering pieces.
“I love the look of a boxy sweater; I layer it with little tanks that are slightly longer than the sweater. An easy way to elevate your style and get away with a ton of layers is to wear colors that are in the same color family. It lends a polished air to whatever you’re wearing. I also love the look of a cardigan that hits just below the knee. It’s a great transitional piece that will see you from fall to winter.”
