Try The Trend: Bright Summer Dresses
Welcome to Try the Trend! In this series, we challenge you to step outside your closet comfort zone and test-drive a trend. At thredUP, we believe in interpreting the trends rather than following them blindly, so we’ll feature real women (mostly thredUP employees!) who have taken a trend and made it their own.
This week, summer interns Nellie Davis and Shannon Caulfield try a trend we love (and that will never go out of style) — bright dresses! Why do we love dresses here at thredUP? Because we’re busy — a dress is a throw-it-on, one-and-done outfit wonder. They also tend to make us feel, well, pretty. Read on to meet Nellie and Shannon and learn why these two love this trend.
Shannon [right] is a business student at UC Berkeley. She loves long distance running, anything on Bravo TV, and a warm cup of tea.
Describe your style: My style is girly meets bohemian. I prefer to wear lightweight, patterned pieces on a day-to-day basis.
Describe today’s outfit: Today, I’m wearing a fuchsia fit and flare dress with tan booties. I also added a silver statement necklace to dress up the outfit a bit. I absolutely love wearing dresses. Not only are they easy to throw on, but they can be styled in so many ways!
What are some other ways you’ll interpret this trend over the summer? I tend to wear dresses pretty frequently during the summer. I really like pairing solid color dresses with bold jewelry to glam up the look. I also like to pair casual dresses with chunky sweaters to keep warm during the cooler days of San Francisco summer.
What do you think is most important to keep in mind when trying this trend? A dress can be worn more than once! You’d be surprised the number of outfits I have formed from a single dress.
Nellie [left] is a Texas Christian University student studying fashion merchandising. She’s a travel junkie who can’t wait to study abroad in Italy this fall. She is spending her summer at thredUP as a merchandising intern.
Describe your style: It’s a balance between Southern style and California ease. I love the natural, beachy look, but, after leaving for college in the South, I now also have a soft spot for monograms and Lilly Pulitzer. As a rule of thumb, if it’s pink, I probably own it.
Describe today’s outfit: I brought a little Southern class to the city with this Lilly Pulitzer dress. Its vibrant colors definitely brightened up my day at the office, and the pattern is a great conversation starter. The simple shift shape means it’s comfy for all day wear!
What are some other ways you’ll interpret this trend over the summer? Working in the city has changed my summer wardrobe outlook a lot. San Francisco weather calls for fun layering while being in an office environment means I’ve been shopping for sassy collared dresses to wear sweaters over.
What do you think is most important to keep in mind when trying this trend? While the boho and oversized look is in style, I’m still a big believer in emphasizing the waist with a skinny belt or long necklace.
