Raisins, Dental Floss and Pennies

I’ll never forget the year my mom announced that she would be handing out little boxes of raisins on Halloween. I completely flipped out. Raisins??? It was almost as bad as our dentist neighbor up the street who gave out dental floss every year or the old lady around the corner who gave each kid 1 penny. I’m all for dental hygiene and saving your pennies, but as a little kid, those were the last things I wanted to think about when trick or treating. And as far as raisins go, I was certain that most kids would be begging to trade them for someone else’s snickers bar.

Now that I’m a mom, I completely understand my mom’s reasoning for wanting to contribute a little healthy snack to everyone’s treat bags. Looking back, I’m sure even she would have preferred a candy bar to raisins. Most likely she didn’t want the temptation of any of that candy in the house! But, I do still think Halloween should be a day for treats. I myself, still choose to give out candy (my 2 favorites: Butterfingers and little bags of Haribo gummy bears), but I think there are a lot of other non-candy items that can be fun too! Here are just a few alternatives I recently came across:

  • Temporary Tattoos
  • Little bottles of bubbles
  • Glow in the dark stickers
  • Mini containers of Play-Doh
  • Mini packs of crayons
  • Packets of Hot Chocolate
  • Granola bars
  • Travel size boxes of cereal
  • Coupons to a local ice cream shop
  • Packages of single serving microwave popcorn
  • Sugarless gum
  • Mini juice boxes

So, what’s your favorite thing to hand out on Halloween?
