7 Fall Jackets & Coats You’ll Love

share this:

It may not be officially fall yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning! It’s almost time to up your layering game, starting with a staple outer layer. Whether it’s a sturdy camel hair coat, a trusty trench coat, or a weather-beaten leather jacket, we all need outerwear that can stand the test of temperature and time.

Whether you’re thinking of trying on a new look or just refreshing your favorite fall silhouette, this list of jacket and coat types will help inspire your next fall outfit.

1. Denim Jacket

@the.chic.diary

The perfect daytime companion! Whether oversized, cropped, or tapered, a jean jacket keeps the chills at bay while adding a laid-back vibe to your outfit. Here are some ideas on how to style your favorite denim jacket.

STYLE TIPS:

— Jean jackets may be a tomboy staple, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a feminine twist. A floral print wrap dress does the trick, especially for those days that blow hot and cold.

— Opting for a bleached wash? You can pull the look together with similarly bright colors, or reel it back in with darker separates. Sooo many cute plus size coats and jackets styles too!

2. Leather Jacket

@rain.in.style

Casual enough for every day but polished enough for a night out. Throwing a leather (or faux leather) jacket over your outfit adds an instant punch of edge. The leather jacket is denim’s wild sister; bring on the studs, the buttery suede, and utilitarian zips!

STYLE TIPS:

— Everyone needs a BLJ, aka a black leather jacket. Pair a jet black number with bright pops of color, whether it be a printed skirt or a shimmery clutch. You can’t go wrong!

— A black, regular-cut leather jacket will take you far, but consider making this go-to outer layer your favorite statement. Opt for a bright hue (powder blue leather jackets are in, y’all), a cropped silhouette, or a style with fringing!

3. Blazer

@diaryofthisgirlmegan

We love our casual layers for fall, but sometimes occasions (and work) call for more polished silhouettes. Enter the blazer! A tailored layer gives even your cozy sweaters and jeans a refined touch.

STYLE TIPS:

— Blazers don’t have to be “blah”-zers. Add a little life to drab fall/winter sets by reaching for a preppy striped blazer. It makes a statement while still remaining office-friendly.

— This tailored style may be a boardroom staple but they don’t have to stay there. Make blazers part of your off-duty rota by styling them with brightly colored printed layers (polka dots are a MUST).

4. Trench Coat

Your fall closet isn’t complete without a classic trench! Rain or shine, this form-meets-function silhouette will keep you dry and in style.

STYLE TIPS:

— The typical trench coat’s muted color will give you more room to bring in bright colors and prints. Get creative. This polished silhouette is great for softening bold looks.

— A trench coat’s longer silhouette offers an opportunity to play with lengths! Opt for a pencil skirt that hits just above the knee or cropped slacks. Elevate with a pair of heels, or bring an edge to the classic style with sneakers.

5. Peacoat

@lifestyledbyerica

We love a cozy woolen peacoat for fall! A sleek answer to bulkier outerwear (looking at you, puffer jackets), the peacoat is great casual alternative to the leather jacket that can be instantly dressed up for date night.

STYLE TIPS:

— Your fall/winter styling doesn’t have to be bland. Opt for a herringbone or check plaid print coat for a lasting statement no matter the outfit.

— The peacoat’s distinctive 2×2 double button fastening is iconic but it tends to make your figure look wider. Lengthen your silhouette with a slimming pair of jeans or an A-line dress. Top it off with a statement hat (like a cute beret) and heels!

6. Utility Jacket

@girlmeetsgold

So, we’ve covered A LOT of the classic styles for coats and jackets, but we definitely shouldn’t overlook our street-friendly staples! If you’ve ever complained about not having enough pockets, then the military jacket is for you.

STYLE TIPS:

— The standard utility jacket comes in khaki green or a deep navy, these are both super easy colors to play with. An easy formula would be to throw it on with a pair of jeans and caramel brown boots.

— It’s not called utilitarian for nothing. Take advantage of the straps, drawstrings, and belts that come with this style. Cinch the waist or loosen up for a more relaxed look. Check out these cute and versatile maternity coats and jackets while you’re at it!

7. Bomber Jacket

There’s something about bomber jackets that make them perfect for the weekend. Maybe it’s the sporty look, the cropped silhouette, or simply because it’s just so unbelievably comfy! Blouson or bomber, this jacket style is street style-approved look.

STYLE TIPS:

— Give your summer-to-fall dresses an edge with a sporty zip jacket. Simply pair your outfit with high-heeled booties and you’re ready for a night out!

— For days where you just can’t be bothered to style up, throw on a hoodie underneath your fave bomber for a comfy-meets-chic street look.
