We Ordered Goody Boxes and Opened Them in Front of Everyone

share this:

Have you ordered your Goody Box yet? We have! At the thredUP office, getting a Goody Box is kind of a big deal. Okay, it’s a HUGE deal.

Why do we love Goody Boxes so much? Because it’s the easiest way to shop secondhand. You pay a $10 deposit for the box, and you receive a curated box of 10 items handpicked just for you based on your style preferences. Oh, and that $10 you paid initially? It’s applied to any goodies you decide to purchase. With over $500 of savings in each box, you gotta get on this Goody Box hype.

The most essential Goody Box is the Just For You Box, which includes a mix of items, like easy dresses, everyday denim, and standout shoes. We also offer themed Goody Boxes for activewear, business casual styles, seasonal looks, and so much more. No matter what your styling needs may be, you can order a Goody Box and have it sent straight to you (or in our case, straight to thredUP HQ in San Francisco).

When someone receives a Goody Box here at the office, we can’t help but spin around our chairs and eagerly watch as each item is pulled out. Sometimes (always) we give our opinion about each item, and sometimes we even try to steal it for ourselves.

Check out what these thredUP employees have to say about their unboxing experiences, the best items they received, and the tips they have to get the most out of YOUR Goody Box. An unboxing party could be on its way to you…

What tips do you have for ordering a Goody Box?

Take advantage of the extra information box, let your stylist know what colors/styles you love or don’t love!

Did you open the Goody Box in the office? How was the experience of opening seeing all the items with the other thredUP employees?

Yes! It was super fun, everyone really enjoys seeing the surprises in the box! It’s great to get everyone’s first reactions and I think it even encourages others to try out the box too. We all swapped tips on what styles they picked for their goody box and the additional info they gave to their stylist. It’s interesting to see how differently we all shopped and the result of it.

How did it feel to open a Goody Box not knowing exactly what was inside?

It’s like opening an early birthday present! I think whether or not you choose to purchase a lot of items, it’s still fun to see what the stylist picked for you. Especially if it’s an item or two that you would’ve never picked for yourself and now that you received it, you might consider trying it out.

How many items did you keep from your Goody Box? What was your favorite item?

Kept 3 items. Favorite = Thakoon striped skirt

Do you feel like the stylist provided options that suited your personal style?

Yes! I like very simple silhouettes and I’m a minimal color person. My closet is filled with black, white, and blue hues. My box had these options, but I was very surprised when she added the Thakoon skirt which has bright red, blue, and black stripes. I wouldn’t have picked this myself, but my stylist seemed to know how to push me a little out of my comfort zone and to try something new. It ended up being my favorite item and I couldn’t wait to wear it.

Did you open the Goody Box in the office? How was the experience of opening seeing all the items with the other thredUP employees?

Yes! It’s fun. We get excited when we see a Goody Box come into the office. We gather around, watch the unboxing, and comment on the items.

Do you feel like the stylist provided options that suited your personal style?

Yes, definitely. There were lots of fun options in the box that were within my general comfort zone, and a few that were a little outside but fun to consider.

Did you add any extra information to help your stylist know what to pick?

Yes! I didn’t share a Pinterest board, but I did provide details about my personal style including adjectives that describe my style, and specific things I liked and didn’t like, fabrics and colors I liked, as well as brands and designers I liked that weren’t a part of the style quiz but I thought would provide guidance.

What tips do you have for ordering a Goody Box?

Be specific! Add details about colors, cuts, fits, style that you know work for you and what you do/don’t want, for example, I said “high-waisted pants & skirts; oversized tops, black, grays, metallics; no loud pattern or bright colors; leather, silk, cashmere; edgy chic minimalist, think COS.”

Like Christmas morning, fashion-edition. 🙂

How many items did you keep from your Goody Box? What was your favorite item?

I kept five items, a couple of dresses, a bag, and a red skirt. I’m pretty excited to come up with ways to style it since it’s so different from what I usually wear. My favorite item, a denim pinafore dress from Topshop, was actually something I favorited on the website! I was so surprised when I found it in my Goody Box and glad that my stylist took time to look through my account.

What tips do you have for ordering a Goody Box?

I’d say if you’re looking to be surprised and find something different than the usual, go into it with an open mind. If you’re looking for something in particular (and you can’t put a finger on it), give your stylist as much information as possible about your style, and your likes and dislikes. Favorite things on thredUP, save your brand searches, share (or make) your Pinterest board, all of these will help the stylist curating your box a better idea of what you’re all about.

Did you open the Goody Box in the office? How was the experience of opening seeing all the items with the other thredUP employees?

Honestly? Apart from the anticipation of finding something great in my box, I look forward to the Great Unboxing in the office! Everyone gets super hyped and excited. We’re all comfortable enough to share our opinion, which is great when you’re wavering between a “Yes” and a “Pass”. Plus, if there’s an item I don’t want, there’s sure to be someone in the office who would love it! Just passing along the good vibes. 🙂

The folks in the office loved opening these boxes together and we hope it inspires you to try it out, too. Unbox by yourself or with a group of friends like we do. If you want to be a little more adventurous with your wardrobe, or if you’re too busy to shop, Goody Boxes are for YOU!
