Staffer Spotlight: Find Out Erin’s Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep!
Welcome to Employee Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP employees. Erin Wallace, our Brand Director, shares how much of her wardrobe is secondhand (spoiler alert: it’s thrift goals, y’all), plus what her intriguing life hack is for a good night’s sleep (also interior goals).
What do you love most about working at thredUP?
The people! Everyone here is smart, collaborative, hard-working and fun.
How would you describe thredUP in 5 words or less:
A better way to shop.
What’s your top secret tip to shopping on thredUP?
Saving your sizes is a no brainer, but I also like to save searches for my favorite brands. (Want more thredUP shopping hacks? Learn here)
What’s your top secret tip to cleaning out your closet?
I try not to have too much nostalgia about clothing. If you haven’t worn it and don’t have a vision for how you’ll wear it, let it go. Also, I tell remind myself that if I make room in my closet, I’m allowed to go shopping (secondhand, of course)! That always inspires me to dig a little deeper.
How would you describe your style?
Minimal with an edge. I like a lot of layers and oversized pieces and will wear white sneakers with pretty much anything.
What percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted?
It has to be over 90%. I’ve been thrifting since high school in the early 1990’s and working in secondhand for 15 years — paying retail prices seem bananas to me.
Why do you think secondhand first?
Our changing consumer behaviors and the rise of fast fashion have created a huge and growing textile mess that is unsustainable for our environment — shopping secondhand and participating as much as possible in the circular economy can slow that trend. I love shopping and I love fashion and shopping secondhand lets me enjoy both without contributing to very real problems.
Where do you get your coffee?
At home I get it from my local coffee shop, Highwire. At work we’re surrounded by good coffee shops in every direction but I usually go to Counter Culture.
Best life hack:
Having a super minimal all-white bedroom, from floors to ceiling and everything in between is the fastest, most inexpensive way to a calm space and ensure a good night’s sleep.
What was the best deal you scored on thredUP?
Gold Escada high-waisted wide leg trousers that I got in a Goody Box (I’ve ordered three!).
Best thrifty living tip:
Pack your lunch!
Tell us what you love about the selling experience/Cleaning Out at thredUP.
The convenience of being able to print a label a home and have a box packed up and waiting for my mailbox. Also, I love being able to send in my donations and get a tax receipt, too.
What styles are you looking forward to wearing most for fall?
I love coats, so I’m always excited for it to get cool enough to wear some of my heavier ones — I have a very impractical ¾ sleeve leather puffer coat that’s always fun to break out.
What do you keep buying over and over?
White Veja sneakers and Cuyana tote bags.
What are you currently obsessed with?
Currently obsessed with a notebook delivery service called Scribd.com — it was a birthday gift and every month I get a delivery of a couple of beautiful notebooks and pens. I’m on a laptop all day, but still love taking notes and making lists on real paper.
