6 Outfits Ideas That Will Refresh Your Dress

When you see a top that catches your eye, what makes you put it back on the racks versus taking it to the register? For all of us at team thrEDIT, the definitive question between an enthusiastic “YASS!” and a hard “Nope!” is, “How can I wear this?”

It’s difficult to come up with ways to style what we want with what we have. That’s why we’ve challenged our thredUP staffers and influencers to wear a single item multiple ways. Let’s styleUP!

Last week, we challenged our Brand Marketing Coordinator, Cassandra Moua, to wear one skirt, five different ways. Now let’s kick it up a notch with a dress! Often considered a one-in-all item, making a dress look different can be difficult. That’s why we asked stylish blogger Bethany of Twenty Something Plus and Taryn Newton of Glamorous Versatility to give us a few looks to copy!

Bethany (Bet for short) is the Boston-based blogger behind Twenty Something Plus. She loves shopping secondhand because it helps her save money so that she can do more with her summer. For this challenge, she opted for a bold, red Banana Republic dress to create three stunning looks with just a few closet essentials.

The Head-Over-Jeans Outfit

A stunning throwback to ’90s style! Bet wears her dress over a pair of ripped jeans and Vans skate slip-ons. The dress-over-jeans look is making a comeback, and she’s all in.

— The dress-over-jeans outfit works best with a flowy dress or a dress with some structure to it. Opt for a roomier fit so you can slip into a pair of blues underneath.

— This formula is the grown-up tomboy’s essential look. Bet balances a feminine-meets-masculine look by contrasting ripped jeans with eye-catching gold hoop earrings.

— Don’t know where to start when it comes to denim? Turn to Gap and J. Crew for classic looks, or Zara, Madewell, and Current/Elliott for more edgy, distressed styles.

The Simply-Cinched Look

With just a few small accessories, you can transform your whole dress outfit. Opting for a two-tone palette, Bet reached for matching heels, and a complementary bag and belt.

— A wide belt offers a visual break, giving a sense of layering and a fresh silhouette. Frame with a matching shoulder bag to really pull the outfit together!

— Strappy heels are perfect for short and long dresses alike. It adds a dressy punch for drinks with the girls or even a casual day out. For a more laid-back feel, opt for a lower heel.

The Doubled-Down Outfit

For dresses that don’t offer a lot of shape or may be too short, doubling up with a skirt can accentuate your frame and bring volume to your look. Bet styled her dress with a flowy midi skirt for a cool, layered look. Nobody would have guessed there was a dress under that!

— It goes without saying that you should always opt for a longer skirt, but also make sure your extra layer is high-waisted for the full effect.

— Brighten up your outfit like Bet! This is a fun opportunity to play with two bold colors. Just make sure to pair the look with neutral accessories like minimal gold earrings, a basket bag, and netural slides.

Taryn blogs about her busy life as a stylish mama of three at Glamorous Versatility. She loves glam and classic outfits, especially crisp, white looks. Since yellow is her favorite color, she opted for a bright strapless J. Crew dress to styleUP!

The Complementary Outfit

Complementary outfits get LOTs of compliments. Since Taryn’s working with a bold color, she softened it with a white denim jacket and wedges. It’s the perfect summer outfit for brunch or a casual night out!

— A bright dress calls for a bright outer layer, especially during summer. Keep it simple like Taryn and frame your stunning dress with a white denim jacket and wedges.

— The complementary outfit doesn’t stop there! Own the look by matching your accessories (like Taryn’s cute dangling earrings).

The Tied-Up Outfit

Taryn’s style is all about bold looks that exude confidence (if the yellow didn’t tip you off). She created the perfect night out look by styling her dress with a pink leopard print zip top.

—Knot or tie your top to play with the proportions of your look.  By tying the ends of her top, Taryn transformed her dress into a cute high-waisted pencil skirt while highlighting her curves.

Strappy stiletto heels can really elevate a dress. A good rule of thumb is to match heel height with the length of the dress. A shorter length calls for a lower heel for a more balanced look.

— Worried about heel height? thredUP is on the level. When shopping for the perfect pair, get to what you want faster by filtering by heel height (from 1″ to 5″+).

The Dotty Outfit

Taryn opts for a quick and easy solution for the office. Wearing a shirt over her dress gives the impression of a skirt, while her slide sandals ensure she’d be comfortable on her feet from day to night.

— Working with a plain dress? A great way to build visual interest (and cover up a bit for the office) is to wear your dress under a crisp, patterned button-down. Make sure you stick to complementary colors.

— When working with patterns, picking three three main colors to adhere to means you’re less likely to overwhelm the entire look.
