How To Wear a T-shirt 5 Ways

share this:

When you see a top that catches your eye, what makes you put it back on the racks versus taking it to the register? For all of us at team thrEDIT, the definitive question between an enthusiastic “YASS!” and a hard “Nope!” is, “How can I wear this?”.

When we’re shopping, it’s always hard to imagine creative ways to style what we want with what we have. That’s why we’ve challenged our stylish thredUP influencers to wear a single item five ways. We’ve challenged staffer Cass to wear a single skirt for the entire week, and we asked two fashionistas to transform their dresses into 3 stunning looks, now it’s Tee time! Let’s styleUP!

Found in everyone’s wardrobe, the simple T-shirt is often overlooked when we’re planning the day’s outfit. Nobody has ever asked (out loud) about how to wear or style a T-shirt, or even what to wear with a T-shirt. But maybe we should! What if we told you your fave T-shirt style (black, white, patterned) could be doing sooo much more?

We posed the same question to style, beauty, and travel blogger Kristina of Miss Zias and she got a little creative in finding ways to wear a T-shirt!

Kristina is a style/beauty/travel blogger based in West Hollywood, California. A stylist by trade, she loves mixing high and low fashion, especially more eclectic or menswear-inspired pieces. She loves the thrill of the thrift hunt and is obsessed with finding designer brands like Celinè, Ganni, and Armani, for the fraction of the price at thredUP! Her must-have for the transitional season is a fitted black T-shirt as it’s always in season. It makes sense to challenge her to a tee-off!

The BFFs Look

It wouldn’t be right to do a style challenge about wearing a T-shirts without paying homage to the ultimate pairing: tees and jeans! Perfect for running around town in sneakers or chunky heels (for those dressier meet-ups).

— Be like Kristina in her black T-shirt and brown belt, don’t be hesitant to mix black and brown together! Lighten the pairing with washed tones like a tan shoulder bag or beige strappy heels.

— Add a little flair to a classic look with accessories. Kristina added a pop of bright color to her look through the cute head scarf.

— A great way to mix and match complementary tones while shopping is to search by color on thredUP’s smart filters! Want to tone down a caramel brown belt? Search by tan, ivory, and brown to find the perfect match.

The Off-Duty Look

You couldn’t ask for a better easy breezy look! Perfect for shopping on the weekend with friends or a casual date night. Kristina styled her black tee under a checkered dress along with hi-top Vans skate slip-ons and chunky teal earrings for a stylish yet casual outfit.

— Dress down a dress and dress up a T-shirt all at the same time by playing with layers. It’s a great transitional season solution that maximizes your wardrobe while putting a skater spin on your basics. Go black on black like Kristina to make the checks pop, or find complementary colors for a more rounded out look.

— Not too keen on color? It’s time to make the switch! For those who love their black and white looks, easily bring in a little color by adding smaller colorful elements to your look. Kristina’s cute teal earrings bring out the super subtle green accents in her dress!

— This look works best with a camisole dress. You can use thredUP’s smart filters to shop by style, so you can get to the slip dresses and popovers quicker. You can even further filter by neckline to get the perfect cut!

The Power Lunch Look

Have ya heard? Bermuda shorts are IN. They’re conservative enough for a casual business meeting, and trendy enough for shopping on Melrose or a lunch date. Kristina updated her black T-shirt for the office with a light Ann Taylor linen blazer (it’s hot in Cali!) and Bermuda shorts.

— A white-on-white look is a great frame for basics like a black T-shirt, especially when you up the ante with some bold accessories. Kristina’s cat eye sunglasses add a little vintage flair, while her cute red mules and matching bag add a pop of bold red.

— A good rule of thumb for longer length shorts is to heighten the effect by tucking in your T-shirt. It lengthens the legs and gives more attention to your heels (in this case, some statement mules).

— Looking for the perfect pair of Bermudas? thredUP’s smart filter is here to save the day! Filter by Bermuda length (7-13″) and shop this summer’s trendy tomboy must-have.

The Date Night Look

Feel like getting a little dressy for date night but don’t want to go overboard? Grab a T-shirt, you’re about to do some high-level styling. Kristina layered a strapless form-fitting dress over her black T-shirt for a stand-out look.

— A little simple layering can do so much to transform your basics. Round off the simple yet undeniably trendy look with black heels, gold hoop earrings, and a swipe of red lipstick. You’re going to turn heads!

— This is a great opportunity for some fun colorblocking! Kristina opted for black and tan, but you can get creative by matching similarly hued shades!

— Kristina opted for a sheath dress to show off her curves, but this outfit idea works well with a lot of different cuts. If you know what kind of dress silhouette works for your body type, simply filter by that style on thredUP. You’re bound to find the perfect layering piece.

The Summer Business Look

Kristina brightens up the board room by elevating her casual T-shirt! A classic business look gets the T-shirt treatment as she wears her black tee over a white button-down. It’s a summer take on the cosy sweater-over-shirt look.

— White and black will always be a great pairing, but throwing a third color into the mix can make a difference. Kristina paired her white shirt and black T-shirt with a pair of yellow dress pants to lighten her look. Matched with gold accessories and you’ve got the perfect, well-rounded business outfit.

—  Avoid a stuffy look by rolling your shirtsleeves and leaving the hem untucked. Effortless French girl chic done right!

— Adding a pattern to your button-down collection can add a cool pop to your business outfits (especially when worn under a plain T-shirt). Filter by pattern on thredUP when you’re shopping shirts.

That’s all five! We’re sure Kristina could have come up with more combinations, but half the fun of styling is figuring out your own special look. Feeling inspired? Tell us which look was your favorite and maybe throw in a little styling tip of your own.
