share this:

Any seasoned traveller will tell you that choosing what vacation clothes to bring on a trip can be hard. When you’re living out of your suitcase for a week, you can start to feel pretty limited in your vacation styling options. I mean, who wants to wear the same summer outfit in every photo?

That’s why packing versatile travel essentials is SO important. We’ve made a packing list of all the items you’ll need to look fresh every day of your trip. From beach bumming to road trips, these adventure-ready clothes will form the bedrock of all your summer vacation outfits. They’re all super easy to style up or down, ensuring that you’ll travel light but also travel in style!

1. Tank Tops

With the right bottoms, tanks can be perfect for adventures in the day and night! If you’re going somewhere super hot, trade in your jersey top for a linen style for easy breathability.

— Tank tops show a lot of skin. If you’re wearing it for a night out, balance the top out with a pair of high-waisted jeans. Bonus points if you rock a wide leg for a really flattering play on proportions.

— For cooler weather, layer your tank over a T-shirt or under a sheer blouse. This outfit is pulling double duty by protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays while offering a cute take on layering!

— Pare down the tomboyish look of your tank with a flowing boho skirt. Top off the whole ensemble with cute sandals and a statement necklace.

2. Swimwear

It wouldn’t be summer without hitting the beach or lake. Make a splash in a one-piece swimsuit or a flirty bikini. It’s suns out, buns out!

— Styling a swimsuit might seem pretty limited but you can really change up your outfit simply by throwing on a long necklace and gold bangles. Accessories make all the difference!

— For a pool party, wear a long, flowing kimono over your swimsuit. Add a large sun hat and sunglasses and you’ll be a poolside lounging master.

— For those trips to the boardwalk, throw on a loose tank and shorts. Or if you really want to style it up, wide leg pants and a bikini top is a look that’s bound to snag compliments.

— Bonus tip! Bikinis are an awesome opportunity to play with patterns! You can match a top and bottom with different patterns by finding a pair that have a color in common, or ensuring one print takes centre stage over the other.

3. Shift Dresses

Shifts are super easy to pull off and infinitely versatile with a little accessorizing and layering. It’s a great dress for traveling! Wear a light shift to the beach as a cover-up, or just for everyday adventures!

— Most people’s hangup about shift dresses is that the cut can run kind of… frumpy. An easy fix would be to simply add a belt to the outfit. It accentuates your waist and gives you a chance to make a statement!

— Most shifts are sleeveless, if you’re feeling self conscious about your arms or simply want to dress down, wearing a T-shirt or long sleeve under your dress transforms the whole look.

— Shoes can really make a difference with a shift dress. Dress down with sneakers or flats, or go for a night out in heels. Matched with the shift’s shorter length, the latter will definitely lengthen your legs!

4. Denim Shorts

We love denim shorts. They’re incredibly versatile and add a laid-back edge to any outfit! Whether they’re cutoffs, Bermudas, or even short shorts, there’s a perfect pair out there to see you through your vacation.

— Dress up your shorts or dress down your button-ups by putting them together! A floral print shirt tucked into high-waisted denim shorts is a dapper boost, especially when topped off with a fedora.

— Go for a Canadian Tuxedo vibe by pairing your favorite blues with a chambray shirt! Off-set the monotone look with a contrasting belt.

— Play with length! For those cooler nights, wear a long cardigan or a duster coat over your go-to T-shirts and shorts combo. It’ll have a slimming effect and keep you warm when the temperatures drop.

5. Sandals

Dressier than flip flops and comfier than heels, sandals will keep you on your feet from morning to night. Make sure you get a pedicure before you go!

— If you’re looking to show off a pair of statement sandals then make sure there is a common element (print or color) that goes with the rest of your outfit.

— Dress up a romper or jumpsuit without going overboard with your go-to sandals. They make a great accessory to a lot of different outfits without taking away from the whole look.

— Speaking of accessories… to REALLY pull a look together, match the color of your belt and any other accessories you may have with your sandals to better frame your outfit.

6. Maxi Dresses

The essential vacation dress to travel in. Easy to slip on, easy to slip off. Maxis are a laid-back styling hero that doesn’t forego a feminine look.

— When it comes to somewhat plainer (or at least all-in-one) styles like maxis, accessories are very important! Frame your look with a belt, a hat, and an eye-catching bag to really seal the deal.

— The most appealing thing about maxis is that laid-back, flowing vibe it gives off when worn with sneakers or flat sandals. Add a little texture (and edge) to the look by knotting one end of the hem. It’s also a pretty practical hack for those styles that drag on the ground.

— For a long day out, throw on a denim jacket (it may be hot, but the A/C will be on full blast for sure). Even when off-duty, the denim jacket can be tied around the waist for a laid-back twist. Dress it up a little with sandals and you’ve got the perfect day-to-night summer vacation outfit.

And that’s all there is to a perfect vacation wardrobe! We hope you’re feeling more pumped for that amazing trip you’re about to embark on.

We’re excited for you, make sure to take a lot of pics, especially if you’re rocking your favorite thredUP finds.
