Is This The Best Material To Buy Secondhand?
Molly from A Piece of Toast is all about silk. Aside from ogling her enviable #00td, we wanted to get to the bottom of why she loves silk clothing, and how she cares for it. Luckily she was willing to share some insights, which inspired us to add more silk to our own closets, too!
Silk blouses and silk button downs are some of the most versatile tops in my closet. I recently scooped up an Equipment “Signature Blouse” in a great traditional red hue from thredUP and have been wearing it on repeat.
Not only does the bright color make me happy, but I’ve been able to wear it with everything from dark ripped jeans, lighter flare jeans, white jeans, and that that the weather has started to warm up (at least in Texas) some jean shorts. If I were still a corporate working girl I would be wearing the silk shirt tucked into pencil skirts and with some great tailored pants.
A bit of advice for what to look for when selecting a silk top that you’ll get a lot of wear out of:
1) Chose a color or colors that you wear often and one that can pair will with blue jeans and black (this way it will transition from work to play).
2) Select a top with a sleeve length you’re most comfortable in (for example, if you hate showing your arms, pick a long-sleeved blouse that can be cuffed, if you always get warm go for sleeveless).
3) Check the length – you’ll want something that can be worn tucked in or out of pants and skirts.
4) Know that silk requires TLC (dry cleaning, ironing, etc) and commit to taking good care of your silk pieces so you can wear them well for years to come! (This is also why silk is great to buy secondhand – if well cared for, it holds up!)
