#UPclose: Behind The Book

This is our first post in a new series we’re calling #UPclosewhere we take you behind the scenes to meet our staff, show you cool things we’re working on, and give you a sneak peek into what’s next.

If you’ve recently ordered something on thredUP, you’ve probably seen our little book. It’s something we made to tell you a bit about us as a company, and to share with you why we do what we do. Here, we sat down with our Art Director Maggie to find out more about the inspiration behind the design, and what it all means for our collective mission—to inspire a new generation to think secondhand first.

What is the purpose of the book?
We wanted to tell our story—that what we do goes beyond just the buying and selling of clothes. All of us at thredUP believe in doing good, being a conscious consumer, and simplifying our lives. And we know that all of those things are important to our customers, too.

What was the inspiration behind the look and feel?
I have an interest in arts and crafts, so I was immediately on-board when our CMO told us he wanted it to be “small, handheld, and crafty.” I knew exactly where I wanted to take it.

We’re an e-commerce site, so 80% of my job is digital design. I was excited to work on something more tangible, something you can hold in your hands. I always prefer more traditional means of communication, so instead of writing an email thank you note, I usually choose to handwrite one instead. It feels more thoughtful and special.

Tell us a bit about the process.
I wanted this piece to feel homemade, so the paper material, graphic style and size were all deliberate and taken into consideration. The handwriting is real, and the images are a fun mix of shots from our SF office and our customer’s awesome Instagram photos. I really wanted it to feel authentic, genuine, and to connect with the reader.

I also worked really closely with a copywriter, who helped tie the story together. Another personal design/work belief of mine is the necessity of the art and copy partnership. It could be from my advertising days, but you can’t have one without the other.

Will there be another one?
Maybe…stay tuned!

Describe your style: I gravitate toward classic neutrals. My closet is full of jeans, button-downs, and ankle boots, but I do love a fun printed dress every now and then.

Favorite thing about your job: Being able to wear different hats. Working with really smart, fun people. And the fresh green juices. It’s hard to pick just one.

Your most frequented personal shop on thredUP: “Wang + Rag”. I’m always waiting for new items to come in. It’s a shop full of Alexander Wang and Rag + Bone pieces.

Favorite thredUP find: Hands down, my Vince cashmere dress. Cashmeeere! It was 85% off retail and new with tags!!! ❤ thredUP!
