About You

You are an experienced, team-oriented controller with a proven track record.  You developed your skills at a Big 4 accounting firm and honed them at high-growth startups and public companies in retail, consumer products, manufacturing or in a marketplace.  You know what it takes to be a public company. You can live with ambiguity and you know all about best practices and procedures. You like to teach people to fish and you find whiteboards irresistible.  You’re insanely curious, a life-long learner who is eager to learn about a one-of-a-kind marketplace business. You’re a builder as we need you to develop customized accounting functions and an accounting team to support this unique business.

*thredUP is relocating to Oakland in Fall '19. This role will be expected to work in SF until then.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting:  Lead the timely and accurate monthly close process.  Be the technical accounting decision-maker for the company.
  • Audit:  Own the annual audit process.  Transition the company to the PCAOB standard.  Lead the Audit Committee meetings. 
  • Mentoring/Training:  Develop and mentor a young, growing accounting team.  Integrate them into the larger culture that includes marketing, product, engineering and operations departments.
  • Tax:  Ensure compliance with all applicable taxes (especially sales tax), lead the tax prep and submissions process.
  • Treasury: Maintain appropriate investment and cash balances across the company’s asset portfolio to cover ongoing operations, while limiting exposure to fraud and loss
  • Internal Controls/Processes:  Implement a controls structure that is SOX compliance
  • Develop Close Partnerships: Work closely with fellow department leaders, particularly in procurement, engineering, customer service, and legal.
  • Equity Administration:  Oversee stock admin functions and implement best practices and processes.

Requirements

  • Experience across Audit, Accounting & Reporting, Finance Ops. You have excellent technical accounting skills.
  • 3+ years of Big 4 accounting experience; CPA required.  
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting roles
  • 3+ years of Controller experience with a $100M+ revenue, high volume ( > 1M sales transactions per year), multi-location company.
  • Experience at fast-growing startups. We need someone who can simplify and scale while letting a fast moving business to rapidly experiment with new lines of business.
  • Experience in building accounting teams.  Proven ability to attract and retain talent
  • Experience at public companies. We need someone who knows the drill on quarterly reporting and SOX compliance
  • NetSuite Experience.  You will be the in house ninja teaching others to either use it or use it better.  You will reach across the business to ensure we are leveraging all of its functionality.
  • Experience taking companies public is a plus.  
  • Experience with marketplaces or e-commerce is a plus. Our business model is a unique mixture tech, marketplace, retail and ecommerce.
