Most people today associate polo shirts with trend-setting designer Ralph Lauren, who named his brand Polo. However, these shirts predate Lauren's company by several decades. In the late 19th century, a polo club in Argentina adopted the style as a less stifling alternative to traditional polo gear.
In the 1920s, one of the country's star players opened a shop to sell the design, embossed with a logo of a polo player riding a pony. Soon the very wealthy were wearing custom polo shirts for boating and water sports, and in 1933, French tennis player Rene Lacoste began selling his version with a crocodile logo (sold in the U.S. under the Izod brand). Lauren's offering came later, in 1972.
When and How to Wear Them
Sometimes an occasion calls for something dressier than a T-shirt — but not quite as formal as a suit and tie. That's where polo shirts shine. For adults, the style would be considered business casual; for kids, polo shirts are a way to look sharp without sacrificing practicality or individuality.
Polo shirts are great for school, special events, family pictures, and even everyday wear. Dress them up a bit with khaki pants or corduroys, or stick with jeans or cargo pants for a more casual look. You can layer short-sleeved polo shirts over long-sleeved T-shirts or under boys' cardigan sweaters, denim jackets, blazers, or hooded zip-up sweatshirts.
Popular Polo Shirt Brands
Among the most popular brands of boys' polo shirts are Polo by Ralph Lauren and Lacoste. At thredUP, you can find these brands plus athletic brands like Nike and Adidas, children brands like Carter's and Gymboree, and store brands like Faded Glory from Walmart and SONOMA life + style from Kohl's. You may even be able to find polo shirts featuring your kid's favorite Disney characters.
We know that some brands may fit your little guy better than others, or you may be looking for a specific color to coordinate family photos. That's why we give you the option to narrow your search by brand and color. You can also set a specific price range or size. These options are all found in drop-down menus along the top of a results page. To the left, you can find a list of styles and the option to look only at sale items, items under $10, or new arrivals.
