As an exclusive retailer of women’s clothing, DressBarn has a diverse collection of formalwear, casual clothing, and loungewear for women of all ages. They have over 700 different locations around the world, most of which are standalone retail stores. Their entire inventory is made up of designer fashions that are up to 80% off of what you would typically pay at a department store in your local mall. The main objective of the company is to provide fashionable apparel to every woman, regardless of their budget.
Elliot Jaffe, a merchandising manager from Macy’s decided to create DressBarn with his wife, Roslyn Jaffe. They wanted to take high profile designer fashions and make them affordable for the everyday woman. They created DressBarn and created their own side project while maintaining their regular fulltime positions. By 1963 they had created their very first DressBarn retail location, though it wasn’t an immediate success. They were missing many key elements of a retail chain ranging from parking to changing rooms, which hindered their business. Approximately 1 year after the opening of the store, the business took off and they opened a second store, starting the popular chain.
During the 1980’s, DressBarn saw the most success as they had over 200 different stores across North America. They also began to diversify their brand by offering plus sized merchandise to women as well as petite clothing. This helped to accommodate even more shoppers than before, improving their brand recognition and awarding them with the High-Performance Retailer Award.
Today, you can easily walk into a DressBarn location and find merchandise that would fit into any woman’s wardrobe much like other women’s clothing retailers including Lane Bryant and J. Jill. Originally, DressBarn had catered exclusively to career women that needed tailored suits and dresses for corporate functions. Now they have a variety of different clothing lines to accommodate professional events, formal events, and casual events. You can find anything from loungewear to formal accessories to pair with beautiful dresses.
One of the largest advantages to their line of women’s clothing is that it is affordable. You won’t have to worry about spending thousands of dollars on a single dress made by a high-end designer when their women’s clothing is influenced by high-end fashions. Their prices are substantially lower than what you would expect from a typical department store and they can compliment the styles of many women.
