A Free Concert, Thrift Art & More! Don’t Miss Our Earth Month Festivities

team thredUP

Earth Day is celebrated every day around here, but we love any excuse for a party! This year, we’re showing up IRL in cities (look out, Seattle and LA!), holding a free concert, inspiring others to choose secondhand first, and doubling the eco impact of thrifters like you. But first, a thank you.

Why We Celebrate Earth Month

Because of Earth Day, April is one of the busiest times of the year for sustainability. While we’re committed to fighting fashion waste every day of the year, Earth Month gives us a chance to celebrate the wins, treat you to great goodies, and imagine a world where everybody thrifted.

ICYMI, here’s why thrifting matters: By choosing just one item used over new, you reduce carbon, waste, and water footprints by 82%.* Fashion is one of the most pollutive industries in the world, and we can all help the planet by transforming the way we consume. Thrift more, waste less. It’s so easy and so rewarding (just ask your closet!). This Earth Month, we want to thank you for shaping the future of fashion with us. We’ve come a long way, thrifters, let’s keep this thrift party going.

Keeping clothing in use matters. Your decision to choose used over new matters. Being the catalyst for change in your community matters. There are already enough awesome clothes on the planet, let’s wear them.

Hey world, see us IRL!

This year, the festivities aren’t just online. We’re popping up all over the US to inspire more fashion lovers to think secondhand first so keep an eye out for us! If you see us out in the wild, take a picture and share on Instagram, we’d love to see it. You can see us IRL here:

To celebrate Earth Day, we turned over 1,000 lbs of used clothes destined for landfill into a work of art! You can find our little love letter for the planet at Santa Monica Place (Center Hall, 395 Santa Monica Pl, Santa Monica, CA 90401). Come through in your best thrifted outfit from 4/19 to 4/24.

Did someone say FREE concert? Singer-songwriter Laufey will be performing at the Tunnel of Pre-Loved at 5pm PT on 4/21. To get your invite, sign up for texts from us here. You’ll get a secret passcode to use to get into the event! We have room for 300 thrifters, so make sure you get your RSVP in.

The best part? Our party will be 100% carbon negative!** We know that putting anything out into the world can leave a footprint, even a tunnel made of pre-loved clothes. That’s why we’re working with Native, a Public Benefit Corporation, to offset all CO2e that will be emitted to produce this installation and throw this event. The offsets we will purchase account for every step of our event planning, from the amount of carbon emitted during the production of the installation to the travel footprint of our attendees and staffers.

This Earth Day, we’re doing the most to boost our positive impact and yours too! Keep scrolling to find out how and why you should take the #IHeartThrift pledge.

Take the #IHeartThrift Pledge, Double Your Impact

This Earth Day, we’re imagining a world where everybody thrifts. If everyone bought one used item instead of new this year, we’d save 5.7 billion lbs of CO2e, equivalent to planting 66M trees! Every thrifted item counts. That’s why we’re inviting you to take the #IHeartThrift pledge and commit to swapping at least one new clothing item for used this year.

If you share your pledge before 5/22, we’ll match the CO2e you would have displaced from buying one used item over new (about 17.4 lbs) in offsets. More on how to join the fun here!

What are carbon offsets?

A carbon offset is the removal of CO2e through sequestration or prevention of future emissions (in our case, we will be investing in wind farms) to compensate for emissions produced elsewhere. For example, you could buy carbon offsets with a flight to compensate for the CO2e produced during your trip. Your money may be used to plant trees, invest in clean energy like wind, or to trap greenhouse gas emissions like methane in a landfill.

In our case, the carbon offsets we’ll purchase on your behalf are meant to enhance your actions rather than compensate for them. Win, win!

Who is providing these offsets?

We are working with Native, a Public Benefit Corporation committed to helping companies like us invest in meaningful, measurable change through various energy-saving projects with quantifiable emission reductions.

Our carbon offset revenues will be used to help accelerate development of wind projects in Texas and Colorado. These projects provide renewable energy to power homes which replaces the need for fossil fuel to generate electricity and keeps CO2e out of the atmosphere.

We’re throwing a planet-lovin’ party all month long. Find out what else we’re doing to celebrate Mother Earth (think sales, promo codes, and more!)
