Secondhand Spotlight: Cynthia

In honor of Women's History Month, we're profiling some of the many brilliant women who drive ThredUp's mission of personal expression through sustainable fashion. This week, we talked with Cynthia, Head of Merchandising, and how she goes all out for impact in her demanding role.
ThredUp: Tell us about what you do at TU?
Cynthia: In short, my job is to get the right products and categories to our customers at the right time. I decide what kind of brands and styles should be featured and make sure the marketplace stays competitive, cool, and relevant. This involves tracking what’s selling, what’s flopping, and what customers are loving. I also work with the product team to improve navigation, filters, and recommendations.
What is challenging about it?
We're building a whole new muscle at ThredUp - figuring out how merchandising fits seamlessly across the organization. It’s all about laying the foundation, fine-tuning processes, and making sure we become an efficient, well-oiled (and well-merchandised) machine.
What do you love about it?
What I love most about my role is getting to collaborate with everyone across the organization - learning what each team is working on and figuring out how my role can help make their jobs easier and more successful. It’s all about connecting the dots, streamlining processes, and ultimately creating a smoother, more intuitive shopping experience for our customers.
What is the most important thing to you about working at TU?
This is my first time working for a mission-driven company, and it’s honestly so refreshing and impactful. We’re not just selling fashion - we’re changing the way people shop, making resale the norm, and helping shape a more sustainable future. It’s exciting to be part of something that’s better for the planet, better for future generations, and easier on the wallet. That kind of purpose keeps me motivated every day!
Describe your personal style.
When I asked ChatGPT, it told me my style is all about edgy streetwear meets utilitarian chic - bold, functional, and always with a unique twist. I'm a treasure hunter at heart, always on the lookout for standout pieces with a little flair (and maybe a touch of gangster energy). Wide-leg jeans? Check. A pop of color? Always. Sneakers? A must. And, of course, secondhand shopping is non-negotiable. Style with substance—that’s the vibe.
