Secondhand Spotlight: Sarina

In honor of Women's History Month, we're profiling some of the many brilliant women who drive ThredUp's mission of personal expression through sustainable fashion. This week, we talked with Sarina, Assistant Controller, and how she goes all out for impact in her demanding role.

What is your professional background?
I’m an accountant with a passion for numbers and a love for the retail world! My career began at Deloitte, where I worked as a public accountant focusing on the retail sector. From there, I transitioned to industry, gaining hands-on experience at a mix of public, private, and start-up companies like Gap, Inc. and World Market. Now, I’m at ThredUp, bringing all my knowledge and experience into an exciting new chapter.
What is your role at TU?
Currently, I’m the Assistant Controller, where I oversee the operational accounting teams and help shape our accounting policies. It’s a mix of problem-solving, strategy, and keeping everything running smoothly.
What is challenging about it?
The accounting department touches so many aspects of the company, which is both challenging and exciting. Since the company is always evolving, it keeps me on my toes and requires us to be adaptable and forward-thinking.
What do you love about it?
What I love most about my role is the chance to mentor and support my team. They’re an incredibly bright and talented group and they bring a fun and collaborative energy to the workplace.
What is the most important thing to you about working at TU?
ThredUp is the perfect intersection of all my passions: retail, technology, and sustainability. The company’s dedication to creating a more sustainable fashion future resonates with my values, making my work even more meaningful. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that not only drives innovation but also strives to make a positive impact.

Classic minimalist. I love keeping things simple, timeless, and functional!
